Define long. Do you mean in terms of actual time or moves? There is a big difference.

From wikipedia,

"The longest tournament chess game ever to be played under modern time rules was Nikolić-Arsović, Belgrade 1989, which lasted for 20 hours and 15 minutes, ending in a 269-move draw.[1][2] At the time this game was played, FIDE had modified the fifty move rule to allow 100 moves to be played without a piece being captured in a rook and bishop versus rook endgame, the situation in Nikolić - Arsović. FIDE has since rescinded that modification to the rule.

The longest decisive tournament game is Fressinet-Kosteniuk, Villandry 2007, which Kosteniuk won in 237 moves.[2] The last 116 moves were a rook and bishop versus rook ending, as in Nikolić - Arsović. Fressinet could have claimed a draw under the fifty-move rule, but didn't do so since neither player was keeping score, it being a rapid chess game. Earlier in the tournament, Korchnoi had successfully invoked the rule to claim a draw against Fressinet; the arbiters overruled Fressinet's argument that Korchnoi couldn't do so without keeping score. Fressinet, apparently wanting to be consistent, didn't try to claim a draw against Kosteniuk in the same situation.[3]"

After Four Rounds of the Chess Olympiad, Several Favorites Have Fallen — Seven teams have won all of their matches through the first four rounds of the biennial Chess Olympiad. Four of those teams — the top two Russian teams, Hungary and Armenia — were ranked among the top six at the start, so their standing is no surprise. But three of the leaders — the Netherlands, the Republic of Georgia and Vietnam — are unexpected, in particular the last two, who were ranked No. 20 and 27, respectively, when the chess competition began. Several of the pre-tournament favorites ran into unexpected trouble early on. Ukraine, which was ranked No. 2, gave up a drawn match to Croatia, No. 28, in Round 3. (Matches are between teams of four players). Ukraine is now tied for ...

Yemen sacks chess team for playing against Israel — Yemen has sacked the country's chess team and members of the governing body after its players competed against Israel at a chess tournament in Belarus. The Yemeni Sports minister, Hamud Mohammed Ubad, took the unusual decision after chess players ignored instructions to pull out if drawn against Israel, which is widely criticised in the Middle East for its policies towards the Palestinians. "This was an individual action contrary to the policy of Yemen, which refuses any normalisation with Israel," said Mr Ubad, adding that the chess players were on their way home from Minsk. Like several other Middle Eastern countries, Yemen does not have diplomatic relations with Israel and bars ...

As Chess Olympiad Begins, No Surprises, but More Controversy — The first round of the Chess Olympiad in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, on Tuesday did not produce any upsets, though a few high-ranked chess teams yielded a draw or two. According to the Olympiad’s Web site, there are 1,300 players from 144 countries. The Chess Olympiad, which was first held in 1927 (or 1924, unofficially), is convened every two years. The 2010 Olympiad is particularly important as elections for the top offices in the World Chess Federation, the game’s governing body, will be held near the end of the competition. Prior to the start of the Olympiad, it had been plagued by problems, including a race to finish building the main venues before the teams arrived. Now that the chess event has ...

Chess Puzzles: Richard Reti's Marvelous Squares — A chessboard is a square, divided into 64 black and white squares. But there are more squares in chess, mostly invisible, as part of an amazing chess geometry hidden in chess players' minds. One classic square is often used in pawn endgames when a king is chasing the enemy's passed pawn. The king doesn't have to walk in horizontal or vertical lines, he can run diagonally or zig-zag across the field. But he needs to be close enough to catch the pawn. How close? The king has to walk into a square whose one side is defined as the distance between the pawn and its promoting square at the edge of the board. We can use a famous study by Richard Reti as an example. The world-class player ...

No, I doubt it very much. Especially if you are thinking that your game with tk29560 will go that long. On move 71, it was a mate in 11, even though you guys on currently on move 152.

It's half-interesting, but it's too easy to just drag games out here for it to have some real official meaning in the overall stats book.

Lahno Wins Women’s World Blitz Chess Championship — To be good at blitz, or speed, chess, players must think quickly and have good tactical skills. That is why the best chess players under slow, or classical, chess time controls are not necessarily the best at the faster form of the game. Though only 20 years old, Kateryna Lahno of Ukraine has been among the best women players in the world for seven years and is now ranked No. 7. She is actually ranked higher than Alexandra Kosteniuk of Russia, the current women’s world chess champion, who is No. 10. She is clearly an excellent classical chess player and has won the European Individual Women’s Championship twice (in 2005 and 2008). Now she has proven that she may be even more adept at speed chess. ...

That must be deliberate. I'm surprised the 50 move rule has not been triggered yet. They must be trying to take advantage of each position to maximize the potential number of moves within the 50 move rule.

The game is so long that my computer slows down trying to run the script for the it. I even get a warning from Windows saying that if the script continues the computer may become unresponsive. I kept running it anyway, but didn't have the problem for too long. I just needed to wait a couple minutes.

That game appears to be on-going, but I don't see how it can continue for much longer.

I got the same warning script, but it did load in less than a minute for me. For those who can't/don't want to get the game to load:

stargirlsm vs. jeanybeany

It's on move 2167 right now. But again, completely ridiculous game. I know there was mate earlier, but going from memory, the position at move 71 was close to:

The game did not need nearly 2000 more moves, so that really takes away from it feeling like the legit winner of longest game.

I hope I'm not coming across as too arrogant. I know that some people can't mate with a rook and king vs a king. But at some point, you could just ask someone or look it up. It's one of the easier skills to learn.

50 move draw rule doesn't occur automatically. They would have to request draw manually, or ask Mike to declare it a draw.

Well, the 3rd repeat position draw rule does occur automatically.

Occasions where the 50 move rule might apply do not happen very often. Yet, it should be a simple fix. Such a fix might prevent absurd games lasting thousands of moves!

Threefold repetition rule is triggered automatically in GK, however the game will not end automatically, but the next person to move is given an option to claim the game a draw. Much like in normal OTB chess, the process is not automatic.

A game I played with conditional moves ended automatically with the threefold repetition rule. Maybe it had something to do with the conditional moves. Conditional moves are active when you have a vacation flag. If the threefold repetition occurs while I am on vacation, then I won't be around to take the option. Perhaps that is why it was automatic. (But I could have taken the option when I got back, or perhaps my opponent took the option). I expected it to happen automatically and from my perspective it did.

that ridiculous game...

Message:
without analysis, i believe it to be mate in 3 from move 71...

71... Re4 (or anywhere past the king on the 4th row)
72. Kh2 Re1 (or whatever row you're on, move to the 1st, eg Ra1, or Rb1)
73. Kh3 Rh1#

it's entirely possible that both players believe it to be drawn, and have decided to continue playing the game until one of them dies. i can remember when i first started playing chess, i thought R vs K was a draw. the first key to breaking this silly belief is knowing what the mate looks like, then forcing your opponent into the position is child's play.
